Lately, I discovered the german blogging world. Since I actually talk german natively, it kind of makes sense to also reflect that on my blog.

My previous status

Until now, I did not think about languages on my blog. Hugo was not configured for a specific language, and I just wrote in german or english, depending on the use case and the potential audience. Since most of my articles had a more technical nature, language on my blog was mostly english.

What will change

I am going to run the blog multilingual from now on; I have got a german and an english section. Depending on which section a visitor is in, they will only see posts in this language.

Old posts have not yet been translated; I might do that somewhen in the future. I intend to publish new articles in two languages - let’s see how this will go.

Additionally, I still have to do a bit of translation work: Some texts on the blog (for example, the “Comments” above the comments section) were hard coded directly into the correct HTML file. This has to change now. But since most of these things were english, this should not make too much of a difference for enlisch-reading people.

RSS Feeds?

I am not yet sure how RSS feeds should work in the futue. The default setting of Hugo is that there is a /en/index.xml and a /de/index.xml. I might want to keep an /index.xml, partly to not break any setups, and partly to collect articles in both languages. I am not yet sure how to actually do that, though - or how to work with articles that exist in multiple languages…
